The Story of the Naval War of 1812
By C. S. Forester

No one has been so well equipped as C. S. Forester to dramatize the sea battles of the War of 1812, to characterize the heroes more skillfully, or to comprehend more shrewdly the world unrest that made it possible for an infant republic to embarrass a great nation rich in one hundred years of sea triumphs.

Dedicated to Those who are not Ashamed of Economy
By Mrs. Lydia Maria Child

The true economy of housekeeping is simply the art of gathering up of all the fragments, so that nothing is lost. I mean fragments of time, as well as materials. Nothing should be thrown away so long as it is possible to make use of it, however trifling that use may be; and whatever be the size of the family, every member should be employed either in earning or saving money. So begins The American Frugal Housewife.

First published in 1828, it went through many editions and proved to be an extremely popular nineteenth century manual for homemakers. Interesting recipes and remedies, advice on parenting and the myriad responsibilities of housekeeping are all put forth in straightforward, no-nonsense,Yankee prose.

Mrs. Lydia Maria Child was an early feminist and abolitionist who supported her family through her various literary activities as a writer of many books, a pamphleteer, and a magazine editor.

By Col. Frank A. Haskell

Col. Haskell wrote the first and, according to many authorities, the best eyewitness account of the most pivotal event in American history. His unique position and duties required him to be in many sectors during the three-day battle.

Born in Tunbridge,Vermont, Haskell joined a law firm in Madison, Wisconsin after graduating from Dartmouth in 1854. In 1861 he enlisted in the Sixth Wisconsin Volunteers. He was Aide-decamp to General John Gibbon, the Commander of Second Corps at Gettysburg. Within a few weeks after the battle, he wrote his brother in Portage,Wisconsin, this accurate and very moving account of what he had experienced. Col. Haskell was killed in action on June 3, 1864 at Cold Harbor,Virginia.

"Haskell’s long letter on the conflict lives as a classic narrative." --Allan Nevins,The War for the Union

Its Origin, Progress & Decline in America
By Henry Reed Stiles

Bundling was an important part of American courting life, enjoyed by all good country maids and men and blessed by honest folk. During the nineteenth century, many elders clothed bundling in a licentious mantle, and a dark veil was drawn over the subject. Henry Reed Stiles, no believer in the theory that objectionable portions of history should be kept in the shadows, here defrocks these misconceptions and sheds light on this lost American custom and its origins. This book was banned in Boston in 1872.

Being the Saga of John Young and his Sloop-of-War
By William Bell Clark

During the American Revolution, the Saratoga played a significant role in stemming the flow of supplies to British forces. Sailing out of Delaware River ports on her three cruises, she engaged heavily armed British vessels in spectacularly successful encounters, capturing 12 prizes. In 1781, during a West Indian storm, she disappeared with all hands.

"Mr. Clark has done a memorable job...[John Young] steps out of his pages as a vigorous, driving seaman, but most especially as a man who did some genuine naval thinking, both in the handling of a single ship, and on questions of naval strategy." --Fletcher Pratt, American Historical Review

By Oliver Wendell Holmes
Illustrated by Howard Pyle

Oliver Wendell Holmes, Poet Laureate of Boston, wrote this poem in 1875 as part of the Centenary celebration of the Battle of Bunker Hill.

Two months after Lexington and Concord, American forces seized some high ground in Charleston, threatening the British fleet and Boston, itself.Within hours the British retaliated. While the battle of June 17, 1775 was brief (the colonials ran out of ammunition and had to retreat) it was a very costly victory for the British Army, and it confirmed that the skirmishes of April 19th had heralded a true revolution.

Howard Pyle, artist, illustrator and author of many books, was noted for his ability to capture the American spirit in his works.

A Pioneer Hero
By W. D. Haley

This profile of Jonathan Chapman appeared in Harper’s Magazine of November 1871. It was one of the earliest, if not the first, gathering of all of the facts known about the man called Johnny Appleseed.

From his own admission we have learned that he started life near Boston in 1774.The first independent record of him notes his arrival in 1801, in what is now Licking County, Ohio, with a horseload of appleseeds. He also brought with him his ardent belief in the teachings of Emmanuel Swedenborg, and he spent the rest of his life spreading the gospel of this Christian mystic with an imaginative lending library plan. His mission had him continuously traversing western Pennsylvania, Ohio and Indiana planting and caring for his beloved apple trees.

Johnny Appleseed died in 1847 near Fort Wayne. There is a monument to his memory in South Park, Mansfield, Ohio.
